So..You're In Pain. What Now?

What is Pain Medicine?
Pain Medicine is a new and very rapidly evolving specialty. The American Board of Pain Management defines Pain Medicine as "a discipline within the field of medicine that is concerned with the prevention of pain, and the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of persons in pain."

What Does A Pain Specialist Do?
A pain management specialist is a physician with unique, special training in evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all different types of pain.  As we learn more and more about pain, it becomes clear that it is important to have physicians with specialized knowledge and skills to treat conditions involving pain. Your pain management specialist also plays an important role is coordinating care with physical therapists and other care providers in order to offer patients a comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment plan.

What Should I Expect For My First Pain Management Visit With Dr. Meek?
On your first visit, Dr. Meek will get to know you and begin to evaluate your pain problem.  Typically, this evaluation will involve a detailed health history, a physical exam and a review of any tests you've had performed prior to your visit.  This visit is an opportunity to for Dr. Meek to analyze all of gathered information and discuss with you an initial assessment of your pain problem.  Sometimes, Dr. Meek may know exactly what is causing your pain. Other times, diagnostic imaging or other tests are needed.  Ultimately, when you leave your first visit with Dr. Meek, you should have a clearer understanding of your pain. You should also have a clear understanding of the course of further evaluation and treatment.
