Eickhoff’s Extras: New in the News

Let’s Talk About It…Constipation

Constipation is very common after surgery, due to anesthesia as well as taking pain medication.  Constipation is any decrease in bowel movements from your normal pattern.

Here are a few tricks to prevent or treat constipation:
*Start moving!  Even if it’s short trips through the house or around the block
*Increase your water intake
*Increase fiber rich foods, like peas, broccoli, bran, brown rice, and raisins
*Start on over the counter laxatives (ex: senna) AND stool softeners (ex: docusate).  You need both to promote movement and prevent hardness of stool.   A Pharmacist can help you locate these items and discuss if these medications are a good fit for you. Remember to drink lots of water with these medications!!!

If you have tried these recommendations and are still constipated call your provider for additional treatment options.

MYTH: Toxins are not absorbed from the colon if the bowel isn’t emptied every day.
