Wellness Wednesday / Delia's Dose



Inspired by the cases of soda that I witnessed someone purchase in front of me at my local grocery store.......I feel like talking about Water...Agua....H2O!



"BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER"

Blood is 55% Plasma, and plasma is about 90-92% water, which makes blood about 50% water. Water oxygenates your blood and flushes out toxins. This means that all of your body's systems will be able to function properly and that your immune system will be strong. If your blood isn't carrying oxygen to your cells and toxins are building up, then those toxins stay in your body! That's not Good!



Perhaps you've told yourself...."COME HELL OR HIGH WATER, I am losing weight this year!"  Welll then....drink WATER! If you chose water instead of a calorie filled beverage, and couple that with eating water-rich foods, then you will feel fuller and therefore consume less calories!  You ask..."What are some Water Rich Foods, Delia?"

Cucumbers, Tomatoes, Celery, Watermelon, Grapefruit, Broccoli, Carrots, Spinach and Lettuce! mmmmmmm



"YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER, BUT YOU CAN'T MAKE IT DRINK"....maybe the horse can't drink the water because it can't SEE the water?!?

Follow me here...Drinking water keeps your eyes moist, which allows them to repel dirt and dust that might cause infection! Ah HAH! In addition, drinking lots of water helps maintain the flow of nutrients to the eye and drain toxins from eye tissues, which may help in preventing Glaucoma!



"A FISH OUT OF WATER" is probably sad and depressed, right? Well, maybe the fish doesn't know that if you drink enough water, it actually helps your brain produce seratonin and melatonin, which help you feel better and sleep better!



"STILL WATERS RUN DEEP"...yes they do... and so do still bowels. Yes, I am talking about bowel movements. We all do it! Water helps aid in, shall we say, the elimination process. So, you eat food...it goes into the small intestine, then travels to the large intestine or colon. If you don't have enough water in your body, the large intestine soaks up water from your food waste. These means you will have hard stools and, let's face it, that HURTS! Water lubricates the intestines!



So, what I am trying to say is....Don't get stuck on a "BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER!" Drink Water!! I know, I know...you are saying, "Delia, it is just tasteless, I can't do it!" Ok...baby steps, start with adding 16 ounces a day, then work your way up to 64 ounces/8 cups. For optimum health docs recommend you take your body weight and divide it by 2, and that's how many ounces of water a day you should drink!  Keep in mind, that if you've only been drinking diet or regular soda for a long time, your taste buds are used to that sugar and it may take a while to get used to plain 'ol water.



Here's something I've done and it helps me keep drinking the good stuff....

Slice an orange, lemon or lime, and kiwi. Throw them in a pitcher or large container and then add a few mint sprigs. Fill the container up with water and keep it in your fridge all week. The fruit will infuse a delicious flavor and nutrients to your very healthy water!
